No. 3 Robert Street is the sole surviving building from the Adam Brothers’ famous Adelphi Development built on the North bank of the River Thames between 1768 and 1774. The building is a classic example of Georgian architecture and retains a number of original features, including large marble fireplaces, ornate plaster ceilings and decorative columns.

Robert Adam himself lived at No. 3 Robert Street for a time, and over the centuries a number of other illustrious characters also came to call the property their home. At the turn of the last century, another outstanding architect of his time, Edwyn Luytens, was commissioned to work on the design of the new fourth floor which was added to the building. It was in this apartment which extended across the whole top floor, where J. M. Barrie, a friend of Edwyn Luytens, went to live and where he conceived and wrote his children’s book, Peter Pan. The famous chimney pots, often depicted in scenes of Peter Pan flying over the roof tops of London, are still there to see on the Members’ Roof Terrace.
